M.A.R.I.O Device: Templating Bone Shape For Surgical Accuracy
The Mobile Assisted Reconstruction In Orthopaedics (M.A.R.I.O) device overcomes the current Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgery method shortcomings (high cost, high learning curve, low stability, low accuracy, low intraoperative flexibility, long surgery and preparation times).
It comprises a hand-held device, equipped with a smartphone case and a smartphone app that uses statistical shape modelling to provide anatomic feedback. The device uses a series of plungers placed in an optimal arrangement, so when a reaction force is applied, the surface anatomy of the bone is captured.
